Department of International Economics and Trade of Xi’an Jiaotong University was established as a young and dynamic department based on a range of economic disciplines and specialties after the merger of Xi’an Jiaotong University, Shaanxi University of Finance and Economics and Xi’an Medical University. Currently, 17 teaching and research staff work in the department, including 13 professors and associate professors and 4 lecturers. Among them, there are 3 recipients of thespecial allowance ofthe State Council, 1 recipient of the Program of New Century Excellent Talents inUniversity, and 1 winner of the Philosophy and Social Science Leading Talents Project of Shaanxi Province “High-level Talents Special Support Program”.
The Department consists of three teaching and research sections, namely International Economics, International Trade, Business and Practice, three teaching and research centers, including the Center of International Trade Theory and Policy, the Center of Transnational Corporation Competition and Strategy, and the Center of Regional Economics, and three provincial and ministerial research bases for humanities and social sciences, i.e. Shaanxi Economic Research Center, TheResearchInstitute ofthe“Belt and Road” and Global Development, and the Soft Science Research Base of High-quality Economic Development.
The Department offers a complete range of educational programs. On the basis of maintaining the high quality of undergraduate education in International Economics and Trade, it provides doctoral and M.Sc. programs in International Trade and Regional Economics as well as M.Sc. (taught) program in International Business.
At present, a well-known research group with a combination of middle aged and young scholars actively engaged in the research field of international trade and regional economics. In recent years, the group has successively undertaken more than 30 projects of National Natural Science Foundation of China and National Social Science Foundation of China (including 2Major projects and 6 key projects of National Social Science Foundation of China, 2Major Projects on Philosophy and Social Sciences ofthe Ministry of Education), as well as a number of provincial and ministerial research projects and enterprises entrusted projects. It has published more than 300 research papers in authoritative international and domestic academic journals, and more than 20 monographs and textbooks.Moreover, it has won 3 second prizes ofNationalOutstanding ScientificResearchAchievements ofInstitutions ofHigherEducation, a number of first and second prizes ofOutstanding Works ofShaanxi Philosophical andSocialScience, and 4BusinessDevelopmentResearchAchievementAwards of the Ministry of Commerce. It has won3 first and second prizes of Teaching Achievements in Shaanxi Province,1 first prize of the 1st Graduate Education and Teaching Achievements in Shaanxi Province, and2 Excellent TextbookAwards in Shaanxi Institutions of Higher Education. The development and features of International Trade and Regional Economics are as follows.
The undergraduate program of International Trade (now the undergraduate program of International Economics and Trade) was established in 1985. It was approved by the Ministry of Education to confer master’s degree in 1990 and doctor’s degree in 2001 respectively, and to recruit postdoctoral researchers. It is one of the earliest disciplines in the field ofinternationaltrade entitled to recruit master’s and doctoral students in China. The undergraduate program of International Economics and Trade has won the titles of “Characteristic Specialty” and “Famous Specialty” of Shaanxi Province, and it was selected for the 1stNational First-class Course Construction Project in 2019.
After years of development, this discipline has formed its research characteristics in three aspects: (1)The study of international trade theory and policy, emphasizing on the close link of major practical and theoretical issues in the field of international trade. A series of landmark research have been produced in the field of open economy and international trade barriers and its strategy in the construction of the “Belt and Road”, internet economy, digital trade,andenvironmental policy. (2)Research on the competition and strategy of transnational corporations, emphasizing the integration of frontier theories in the development of transnational corporations with practical issues of the internationalization development of Chinese enterprises.Research on the integrated development of transnational retail enterprises and the internationalization development of Chinese manufacturing industry has achieved a number of landmark academic achievements. (3)Theory and method research of international financial risk management and venture capital. Plentiful outstanding academic achievements have been obtained in credit risk management, entrepreneurial economy,andventure capital.
The discipline ofRegionalEconomics was founded in 1994, and was approved by the Ministry of Education to offer a master’s program in 1998 and a doctoral program in 2001, and to recruit postdoctoral researchers. After several years of development, this discipline has formed three distinctive research directions: (1)Regional economic theory and method research, studying regional economic spatial distribution, structural evolution, characteristics and regulation of economic development, etc., and great achievements have been made in the analysis of regional industrial structure characteristics under the open economy, phase diagram study of regional economic structure transformation, generalized gradient theory, etc. (2)Research on regional sustainable development, studying the carrying capacity of sustainable regional development and the coordinated development of regional population, resources and environment, and emphasizing the combination of multidisciplinary theories and methods of resource and environmental economics and ecological economics. A number of influential academic achievements have been made in the coordinated development of regional population, resources and environment and the sustainable utilization of non-renewable resources. (3) Research on the urban economy and regional economy planning, emphasizing studying economic development zone, high-tech development zone, central city and urban agglomeration and theoretical and practical issues in its management from the perspective of economics. Outstanding research has been achieved in urban real estate economics and management,enhancement ofcentral city comprehensive competitiveness, and environmental quality assessment.
